Johnny Clegg is a South African singer. He formed the first mixed music band with white and black musicians in the country. He was also encarcelated for singing with black musicians. He wrote this song in 1987 when Mandela was in jail. The lyrics mix English with the Zulu language. Asimbonanga means “we haven’t seen him” and it was dedicated to Mandela and claimed for his freedom. In 1999 Mandela himself appeared at a concert and danced the song.
